Essay One

For this assignment, you must write an 850-word essay in which you describe and critique a television show you watched as you grew up. Your tasks are to describe the show in detail and explain how you felt about it when you first watched it. But you must also explain how you feel about the show now. (You will need to find your own structure for the essay as you construct your arguments.) As part of your essay, you will want to consider describing, among other things, the show's logical fallacies and stereotypes.

The aim of the assignment is to help you begin constructing written arguments with content material that is familiar to you. This first essay also serves as a diagnostic essay that will allow me to assess your writing skills in terms of generating content and mechanics.

Have fun with this one! But, remember, you need to critique your show, which means you need to describe it now with a critical eye, showing the show's logical distortions and stereotypes. An important part of the paper will be describing the disparity between how you view the show now and how you viewed the show then. It's important, but not necessary, that you watch a rerun of the show now to help you understand your views about it.
